American Cinema
Mud 2012
Director: Jeff Nichols
Writer: Jeff Nichols
Starring: Matthew McConaughey, Tye Sheridan, Jacob Lofland
MUD started out as a predictable coming of age flick…or so I thought. At about 8 minutes in, I made several predictions as to what events would transpire by the end of the film. I surprised myself by being wrong by all accounts. Therefore, wounded pride aside, I feel confident to say this story subtly develops and reveals its flavor over the course of the film. McConaughey gives a solid performance that is only overshadowed by his teeth (that could have had their own credit). Overall, MUD is a genre blending movie, with thriller aspects, touches of mystery and action, and a not overpowering romance theme.
